Rice schemes have left trail of devastation down the years

Every elected government in Thailand has supported a rice subsidy scheme for Thai farmers.

Each has said that Thai farmers would reap benefits from such a scheme. Each set the rice price higher than the world-market price. However, the results have brought Thailand nothing but huge losses.
In the past nine years, under five governments, Thailand has lost at least Bt489.934 billion from rice-subsidy schemes. This proves that government’s policy is inefficient. The new government should seriously consider whether or not the rice scheme should continue or should be cancelled.
