TWO THOUSAND fans, mostly girls, were absolutely delighted with Hong Jong Hyun’s “Be My Valentine” concert at Muang Thai GMM Live House at CentralWorld on Valentine’s Day. It was the South Korean star’s first chance to meet his Thai fans.
A huge roar went up when he appeared onstage to sing “Like a Child”.
“I’m very excited to hear you screaming, especially since I forgot the first verse!” grinned Jong Hyun, the star of such TV series as “Vampire Idol”, “Jeon Woo-chi”, “Dating Agency: Cyrano” and the reality show “We Got Married”.
His devotees were next presented with a biographical film on the big screen, and then it was time for some questions. Asked what his favourite food or drink was so far in Thailand, he replied, “I like to drink watermelon smoothies.”
What places in South Korea does he recommend visiting? “Jeju Island,” he declared. “It’s more than a tourist destination – it’s also where my parents live.”
How does he let a girl know he’s in love with her?
“I’ve never said the word ‘love’ to any girl, but there was one girl who confessed her love for me,” Jong Hyun answered to a wave of serious swooning. “But if I were to say ‘I love you’ to a girl, I’d say, ‘Phom rak khun’ – I love you, all my Thai fans!”
Well, you can just imagine the noise.
The decks were cleared for a few games, the first being “Sanit Chid Chuea”, in which three fans were plucked from the audience to help Jong Hyun replicate the “back hug” scene from “Her Lovely Heels”, another of his TV shows. They also mimicked the piggybacking and joining of hands from “We Got Married”, and the winner walked away with a nice Valentine gift from the star.
Jong Hyun sang “After Send You” and then got another pair of fans onstage for some cake. He fed it to them personally, with predictable results. “Look,” he said, “it’s so delicious that they’re crying!”
The fans had a little surprise for their hero, too – a video with the message “You are always in our hearts” and imagery of audience members holding up a banner reading “I love Hong Jong Hyun!”
“Thank you, everybody,” he said in response. “This is the most impressive gift I’ve ever received.” And with that he sang a farewell song, “Confession”.
