Letter-writer “Fair play” is obviously not a cyclist. I agree that cycling around Bangkok is no fun and is only for the experienced and the brave. But, while cycling all over Thailand, from Mae Sai to Betong and Ubon to Mae Sariang, I’ve never had a single problem. I’ve only been shown extreme consideration by other road users, often accompanied by a beep, wave and friendly smile.
Besides exercising the usual caution I do, however, adhere to certain rules. I never ride after dark or very early in the morning, when the drunks and dope-heads are snoozing at the wheel. When I hear a vehicle approaching from the rear I always pull over to the extreme left of the road to give the vehicle maximum clearance.
The driver of that vehicle almost always swings away, thereby giving me plenty of space. Be considerate to other road users and they’ll be the same to you! I regard cycling as a solo activity and, as a previous writer noted, a group of riders riding two, three or more abreast is not only inconsiderate but is asking for trouble. Cycling clubs must impress this on their members – single file only.
“Fair play” wants cyclists to be restricted to parks and designated areas such as the track at Suvarnabhumi Airport. What an awful thought. The idea of cycling outside the cities is to see this beautiful country at a leisurely pace, keep fit and pursue a challenge. Cycling is the most efficient way of travelling short distances – no pollution and great exercise. The government is doing the right thing promoting this enjoyable activity.
It’s just those pesky dogs!
