The system by which the over-50s are allowed to retire in Thailand is not new. It has been in place for the last 10 years to my knowledge.
The conditions laid down by Immigration are quite reasonable and very sensible. The country does not wish to be responsible for people arriving without some financial security and a source of income.
By insisting upon proof of capital of at least Bt800,000 and a reasonable income, the authorities help both the country and the retiree. Thailand is not a foolish welfare state that will allow itself to finish up like the UK, a farewell state. Also, should those retiring here fall ill, in their own interest they will need some financial security. Having to meet these criteria annually should be seen to be in everyone’s interest.
It is not a “honey trap” in which farang can be caught, as the writer suggests. The conditions are made perfectly clear before people retire here. Those who find this unacceptable should remain in the UK – which is now the honey pot of the world. It is attracting hundreds of thousands of penniless migrants who are crushing a welfare state that is intended for the indigenous population. The British elderly and poor are the ones suffering from the unconditional, uncontrolled foreign invasion of economic migrants.
Well done, Thailand. Stick with your immigration conditions. Keep your borders secure. Protect your sovereignty and do not allow foreign dependency to be created.
