Airplanes are not the place to joke around

Airplanes are not the place to joke around

Re: "Lion Air flight cancelled after passenger makes bomb joke", and "First-time flier could face jail for bomb joke that backfired", National, November 2 and 3.

According to news reports, a passenger joked with a female flight attendant by telling her he had a bomb in his bag.
But the flight attendant didn’t know he was joking, as he said it with a straight face and refused to confirm or deny that there was a bomb in the bag when asked several times to do so by her and the crew chief.
In situations like this, should the captain have flown or cancelled the flight, given concerns for the safety of all the crew and passengers?
When travelling by aircraft for the first time, passengers should study how they should cooperate with the airline and safely make their journey with fellow travellers.
They should especially know the do’s and don’ts of how they should behave on a plane, such as wearing a seatbelt at all times when seated, paying attention to the pre-flight briefing, knowing the amount of liquid that passengers are allowed in carry-on baggage and the prohibited items.
Guidelines for airplane safety need to be studied seriously because a plane is not the place for tongue-in-cheek comments, and it is a matter of safety always coming first.
