US is the link between ISIS and Mexican drug barons

Re: "Islamic State and drug cartels: what's the difference?", Letters, Nov 19.

Guy Baker poses a very large question. While there are considerable differences, the two issues do have much in common besides the killing: they share a common cause. Fundamentally causal of both is the United States.
The US is possibly the greatest consumer in the developed world of recreational drugs. They are the demand, and Mexico is the backdoor supplier only too willing to meet that demand. No demand would mean no supply, no drug cartels and no murderous behaviour.
In addition, Uncle Sam’s misguided foreign policy is seriously flawed. The US is largely responsible for the revival of fundamentalist Islam in the form of ISIS. Obsessed with its own Judaeo-Christian democratic ideology, America naively seeks to impose its ideals on others. Like all ill-considered policies, it is backfiring and threatening everything the country stands for. Sending in the Marines without a clear follow-up plan is a serious intellectual failure, as was the case with Benghazi affair.
Toppling Middle Eastern despots and supplying arms to rebels with that aim is a policy that’s coming home to haunt not only the US but the rest of the civilised world. The despots they’ve removed might have maligned human rights, but they understood the tribal nature of their peoples and maintained stability. The Arab world by nature does not lend itself to democracy. There is simply too much tribal, ethnic and religious conflict with Sunnis fighting Shias. Saddam kept this under control, as did al-Assad.
It’s become a similar situation in Libya since the demise of Gadhafi’s regime. It’s a lawless country now as a result of the US-assisted “Arab Spring” and it is the main place of departure for illegal migration to Europe.
This migration has already proved to be a Trojan horse by assisting Islamic fundamentalist entry to Europe. This was illustrated by last weekend’s Paris massacre.
