FOR MANY health junkies, working out isn’t just about running on a treadmill or pumping iron but also making a fashion statement in the gym
That’s where Kornpol Meewong and his two pals, the owners of Active private training studio, come in. Observing that their clients also wanted to look good, they created smart sportswear brand Volt last year and haven’t look back since.
A personal trainer since graduating in sports science from Chulalongkorn University, Kornpol set up his private fitness studio in Muang Thong Thani with some friends a few years ago. His range of intensive exercise programmes tailored to meet individual requirements quickly attracted the health-conscious crowd and soon he was drawing celebrities to his gym.
“I dreamt about designing my own sneakers when I was a kid. I went on to study sports science and when I opened the studio, the first thing I did was design smart uniforms for my staff. Customers started asking where they could find similar workout gear and that encouraged me to come up with a collection. We launched Volt on Facebook last year and the response has been terrific ” Kornpol says.
Volt now has more than 120,000 followers on Facebook and last month opened a boutique in Muang Thong Thani. Decorated in trendy loft style with white walls, bare cement floor and ceiling and black shelves, it stocks Volt’s full range.
Kornpol says he inherited his fashion sense from his mum, who is a tailor and dressmaker. He keeps his gear simple but well cut and uses fabrics perfect for a session in the gym including polyester, spandex and cotton.
“The right workout gear can actually improve performance. I combine my knowledge of sports science with the know-how of leading sportswear producers like Nike and Adidas. We use mainly textiles that are flexible and have good ventilation to keep the wearer dry and comfortable,” Kornpol says.
The men’s collection has Velvo shorts in French terry cotton, Axis polyester running shorts and Acce polyester training tank tops in orange, yellow and lime as well as black and white.
For the ladies there’s Stella sport bras and Proton yoga pants in polygon designs made from polyester and spandex as well as Joule running shorts in metallic bronze, silver and gold.
Other best sellers include printed cotton T-shirts, Gravity hoodies and Neutron sweat pants made from French terry cotton. They come in black, white and grey.
Also on offer is a collection of embroidered caps and stylish duffel bags in black, white and pink.
