Music to the ears

Sennheiser Momentum M2 In-Ear phones deliver resounding bass and great instrument detail

A PAIR OF IN-EAR headphones boasting a sleek design and good sound quality, Sennheiser’s Momentum M2 In-Ear phones are the latest addition to the popular series, which is known for powerful bass response, detailed vocal projection and strong sound stage.
The phones look elegant too, with more 200 contrasting red stitches gracing the black-lacquered zipper. The black-and-red cable leads to a red, high-gloss housing. And the Sennheiser symbols are printed on the shiny silver-colour back of each bud.
The Momentum In-Ear comes with an ergonomic design and an adjustable angle of 15 degrees, allowing the earbuds to adapt and fit into your ear canals comfortably. Each pack has three additional sizes of ear sleeves to ensure a good fit and block ambient noises.
The M2 has very good sound quality thanks to its premium grade material. It supports 15-22,000 Hz of frequency response and it has 18 ohms of impedance plus very high sensitivity of 118 dB.
The M2s sound tunnels are made with stainless steel and gave no plastic components. Sennheiser says the M2’s acoustic components are manufactured with precision milling technology to optimise sound quality. And the earphones use a high-quality dynamic driver system.
The M2 is available in two versions, both featuring a 3-button in-line remote and an integrated microphone optimised for iOS or Samsung Galaxy smart devices.
I tested the iOS version with an iPad Pro 9.7-inch and found its in-line remote worked effectively. The remote is part of cable to the right earbud and it has two volume buttons that can be controlled conveniently with the right hand. The volume-up button is logically on top and the volume-down button is lower.
The middle button has several functions. It can be used to answer a call or hang up. When playing music, it serves as the play and pause button. You click it twice to skip to the next track and three times to return to the previous track. You can also fast-forward a song by clicking it twice and holding it down. Or you can rewind a song by clicking three times and holding it down.
The in-line remote also supports Siri voice commands. Here too, you press and hold the middle button for two seconds then give it your voice command.
I found the M2 had good sound quality with powerful bass for in-ear type headphones and generated music clearly and with good detail of the instruments being played.
I tested the phones by listening to rock music as well as songs that highlight bass guitar. For example, I slipped in the earbuds to listen to “The Best of Sting” album. On “Englishman in New York”, the bass guitar and drums sounded powerful and I could clearly hear the saxophone and piano. Sting’s vocals sounded great.
Sennheiser Momentum In-Ear phones have a suggested retail price of Bt4,190 and come with a premium carrying case.
