Big screen brings movies to life

LG's supersize 86-inch TV has quality built in to its sleek design

WITH ITS super large 86-inch screen, very high 4K definition and spectacular HDR technology, LG’s Super UHD UH955T gives any size room that home theatre feeling.
All its technical and physical attributes make it really fun and exciting to watch movies, especially from 4K and HDR sources.
The screen is so large it took over about a quarter of my living room wall. Watching it from about three-metres-away, the larger-than-life images gave that popcorn-ready cinema effect. Although the screen is very large, it is integrated into a slim metal frame, giving a sleek look.
Compared to the LG OLED TV E6T, the UH955T has less blackness as the E6T uses Perfect Black technology and an OLED panel. Regardless, the UH955T has a good level of blackness as it uses True Black Panel and Ultra Luminance technology. LG says the Ultra Luminance sends excess current from dark areas to brighter areas to enhance contrast.
The UH955T uses IPS 4K Quantum Display with 3840x2160 pixels. The display features billions of lifelike colours to make pictures and images look real and natural. LG says its Billion Rich colours feature divides and subdivides colours into a broader spectrum. This allows for more precise colour adjustment across the colour spectrum. The end result is 64 times richer colour compared to conventional LCD TVs.
The TV also reproduces vivid images by using ColourPrime Plus technology that features an extended range of colours. It also features a wide viewing angle, allowing viewers to enjoy vibrant colours from any seat in the room.
Apart from supporting crisp 4K content, the UH955T supports multiple HDR formats. It not only supports a generic HDR10 format but also Dolby Vision, a more advanced, premium vision of HDR that ensures the content is being displayed as it is meant to be seen.
HDR content is made possible through the advancement of movie cameras in the past few years that capture scenes in multiple ways and blend them together. Images are filmed at high and low exposure and are combined to form an HDR image closer to what the human eye actually sees.
When I tested the screen with 4K video clips and 4K HDR clips provided from LG, I was impressed by the sharp, crisp pictures. The clips were provided on a USB drive that can be plugged into the side of the TV and there is also a video player app that can play high-definition clips smoothly. The 4K HDR clips looked stunning with vivid colours and good detail even in dark and shadow areas.
During the test, I enjoyed watching sports on TrueVisions’ Platinum. Watching major football leagues, such as English Premiere League, on this large screen with sharp was more entertaining as it brought the players to life in sharp, vibrant colours.
The TV has several picture modes to suit viewers’ tastes, including Vivid, Standard, Cinema, Sports, Photo, and HDR Effect.
The unit’s sound quality is designed by Harman/Kardon, which is well-known for making high-end sound systems. The internal speakers have 80 watts of output.
It also has Smart TV feature and runs on the webOS 3.0 operating system that is designed to make it easy to set up and access various functions and apps.
The webOS 3.0 guided me through various processes, to tune in to terrestrial digital TV channels easily and connect one of its HDMI ports to TrueVisions’s HD satellite receiver.
The TV has a LAN port and built-in Wi-Fi adapter. I had no problem connecting it wirelessly to my Linksys WRT1200 AC router and it provided a fast connection to Internet and YouTube.com.
With the Smart TV function, users can connect a keyboard and mouse to the TV’s USB port and use the TV’s web browser.
The TV also has a Magic Remote that works like an air mouse to allow you to interact with webOS functions. The webOS function also provides Magic Mobile Connection to access smartphone content.
LG Super UHD UH955T has a suggested retail price of Bt499,990.
