With his unbeaten record on the line, top-ranked fighter Nawaphon tipped the scale at exactly the weight limit, 112 pounds – as did his Mexican rival.
Surachart Pisitwuttinan, the home fighter’s promoter, was confident the Nakhon Ratchasima native can become the latest Thai boxer to clinch a WBC flyweight belt that’s previously been held by the household names such as Pongsaklek Wongjongkam.
“Right now I’m 80 per cent sure that Nawaphon will become Thailand’s latest world champion.
“This is the first time in years we have seen such a big-ticket bout here, and everything is in place to replicate a world-class Las Vegas fight. I want to help elevate the standard of boxing events in the country,” said Surachart, the man behind the success of a host of Thai fighters on the world stage.
The 25-year-old Nawaphon gave only a short comment after completing the pre-fight formalities, saying he was relieved at making the weight. He added that his only aim was to give it his best shot in the ring at realising his lifelong dream of clinching the world championship.
Hernandez, five years his senior, vowed to demonstrate that Mexican boxers were the best in the world.
Tickets priced at Bt100, 300, 500 and 1500 are available at all of ThaiTicketMajor and at the venue. Channel 3HD will broadcast the bout live from 6pm.
