What qualifies as humanely-sourced milk

Re: “Misinformation on dairy from an animal lover”, Have Your Say, May 13.

Thomas Turk wrote that it’s good health advice “to drink a glass of milk a day for calcium”. So am I distorting his views when I say he claims that drinking milk prevents osteoporosis, which is caused by calcium deficiency?
I also wrote that it’s not ethically wrong to drink milk if you’re 100-per-cent certain it was derived humanely – ie the calf was not separated from its mother and neither it nor the mother is slaughtered. To qualify as humanely sourced milk, the cow should also not be given hormones to make it artificially produce more milk than normal.
Turk is a hypocrite to make no mention of the fact that most milk people drink is produced under the cruellest circumstances imaginable. In the past he has written that an animal is entitled to no more moral consideration than a plant.
While he accuses me of being nasty, his letters are vicious tirades against 99 per cent of health professionals, who he accuses of being corrupt.
