I fully concur with Hamish Watters’ kind words about the professionalism at The Nation but strongly disagree with his contention that Have Your Say “leaves much to be desired”. Have Your Say is an eclectic mix of serious debate and enjoyable rant, a glorious ongoing soap opera whose other-worldly characters beat any that one finds in the Thai TV melodramas. It shines as a beacon of light in the grey sea of depressing local news, and the fake international news that the global media expect us to believe; it is a place where topics that the mainstream media refuse to publish are aired (much to the credit of the editors). And then there’s the humour – anyone who was not reduced to tears by the Great Diet Debate between Alf Haupt and Eric Bahrt must have a heart of stone.
Stephff's poignant cartoons are in a similar vein, and probably recognising this, The Nation moved the Have Your Say online link from News & Opinion to the cartoon menu some months ago. So treat our letters as an ongoing textual cartoon, Mr Watters – sit back, relax and enjoy!
