Americans do deserve Trump – though more of us voted for Hillary

Chavalit Wannawijtr is being much too kind when he says we Americans deserve better than Donald Trump. No, we don’t, Khun Chavalit! Trump is exactly what we deserve, because we elected him. It’s the rest of the world that doesn’t deserve him, because they didn’t.
What’s worse, we elected him when we knew exactly what we were getting. This was clear throughout the campaign.
Looking deeper, our system bears much of the blame. Trump didn’t win the popular vote. He won the Electoral College vote. This antiquated institution makes it possible for a candidate to lose the popular vote but win the election. We should have tossed it out ages ago. So we still get the blame, because we could have reformed our system, but we didn’t.
Get rid of the damned Electoral College, let the popular vote determine who gets to be president – one person, one vote, and all votes equal – and we’ll all be a lot better off.
