Your Canadian correspondent could have had an easier visa experience. He could have taken his passport to the local Immigration office and obtained a 30-day extension to supplement the 60 days he received at the Bangkok airport with his multi-entry visa from Ottawa.
After that, he could have made a single day trip to a Thai-Cambodian border post – Pong Nam Ron is okay – and received 60 days again plus 30 when he goes again to local Immigration. That border post does not require an overnight stay in Cambodia.
