New Army chief must have a low opinion of Thais

Re: “New Army chief’s pro-coup stance sparks widespread anger ahead of polls”, front page, October 19.

The comment by new Army chief General Apirat Kongsompong that he does not rule out the possibility of another coup really shows he has contempt for Thai people.
He forgets that the role of the military is to serve the people, not to serve any particular fraction of the society. What happened to the “of the people, by the people and for the people” democratic philosophy?
If any military chief from a developed country made such a comment, he would probably be tried for treason.
Thai politicians are not clean, but the military is not divine either, considering that every time there is a military take-over, the Army budget rises significantly, even if there is no sign of a foreign threat.
Maybe the new Army chief is following in the footsteps of his father [a leader of the 1991 coup] when it comes to protecting the country’s democracy.
