If the US is truly being invaded by the types described in Mr Setter’s letter I can only suggest that America may have contributed magnificently to its own problem. For 60 years the US has engaged in invasion, political overthrow, arms deliveries and personnel training in what it considers its “backyard”.
The US taxpayer has stumped up millions to ensure that leaders with America’s wishes in mind fight back against any land sharing, social programme or civic-minded projects to keep the poor ever poorer. These US policies have ensured that the nastiest, most violent and dictatorial people are in now in control of Guatemala, Honduras, San Salvador and Nicaragua, causing the indigenous population to flee. Wasn’t it the Reagan era when we learned of a plot involving drugs and arms to terrorists organised by leaders without the permission of their government? That these displaced, suffering and impoverished people are trying to find something better is hardly a surprise. Perhaps they have decided that the best place to hide from US violence is in the United States. I think the Thais would be saying “som nam na” (serves you right).
