Bangkokian held for allegedly hoarding Bt6m worth of face masks, Covid-19 test kits

Metropolitan Police announced on Wednesday (May 6) that a 23-year-old man named Athip (surname withheld) was arrested at his home in Bangkok’s Jomthong district on Tuesday evening for allegedly hoarding controlled items.

“Acting on a tip-off that the house had been turned into a warehouse to store controlled goods, police showed up to find 397,520 face masks of different brands, including the 3M N95 masks used by medical staff to treat Covid-19 patients, as well as 960 thermal scanners and 1,975 Covid-19 testing kits. The seized products were worth more than Bt6 million,” said Metropolitan Police chief Pol Lt-General Phakkhaphong Phongphetra.

Athip faces charges of illegally importing and possessing controlled items for commercial purposes. The suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine and was also charged with using illegal narcotics.
The suspect reportedly told the police that he was storing the products for another person. Police have launched an investigation into the case.
