Curfew set to be lifted for 15-day trial period

Curfew set to be lifted for 15-day trial period

The National Security Council will today (June 10) propose lifting the nationwide curfew for a 15-day trial period while maintaining the state of emergency.

The proposal will be put to the government committee tasked with considering relaxation of measures to deal with the Covid-19 crisis. The idea is to evaluate whether people can return to normal life without a curfew but with the state of emergency still in place, said committee member General Nattaphon Narkphanit, who is also Army Deputy Commander in Chief.
Currently, the curfew is imposed from 11pm to 4am.
Nattaphon said the emergency decree was crucial because normal laws would not be able to control emergency situations that might occur in the future. However, after 15 days without the curfew, the committee will gather opinions on whether the public wants to keep the emergency decree in place, he added.

The NSC is reportedly mulling cancelling the curfew on June 15 after new cases of Covid-19 have dwindled. However, the curfew can be reinstated under the state of emergency if the virus crisis flares up again.
Somsak Rungsita, National Security Council (NSC) secretary-general, said the committee meeting today would focus on the fourth phase of lockdown easing, which will likely see permission to reopen granted to boxing stadiums, entertainment venues and 12 other related businesses. Their readiness to reopen under "new normal" restrictions is a factor that would need to be considered, he said.

Regarding the reopening of international airports, he said the time was not right yet and international flights would continue to be barred until the end of this month.

He said there would be discussions on whether airports should open for international flights in July.
The extension of the emergency decree would be one of the topics in the next meeting which will take place in the coming week since the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration must reconsider it.
