Student union president released after arrest

Student union president released after arrest

Jutatip Sirikhan, one of 15 people charged for holding a peaceful political rally at Democracy Monument on July 18, was arrested and then released on bail on Tuesday.

Jutatip is a president of the Student Union of Thailand and a leader of the anti-government Free Youth group.

She was taken to Bangkok’s Samranrat police station and questioned by Pol Maj Gen Metee Rakpan, chief of Metropolitan Police Division 6.

Metee said she was the last remaining case stemming from the July 18 protest and insisted that police were carrying out their duties as quickly as possible.

The student-led protest movement has demanded an end to intimidation of government critics, as well as a new Constitution and dissolution of Parliament.

Jutatip wrote about her arrest on Facebook, saying she was not stressed by the police action. Members of Free Youth gathered outside the police station to offer her moral support.
