No monkeying around: Phetchaburi macaques given a vasectomy

The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry on Tuesday gave long-tailed macaques in Phetchaburi’s Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park a vasectomy in a bid to control their population and reduce the impact on surrounding communities.

“Long-tailed macaques live in a large pack in the park and usually damage the property of people living nearby and in Khlong Krasaeng, Ban Mo, Rai Som and Thongchai subdistricts,” said Yutthaphol Angkinan, adviser to the Natural Resources and Environment minister.

“Furthermore, there have been reports of the animals passing in front of oncoming vehicles and causing road accidents.”

Yutthaphol said the ministry’s campaign aims to reduce the conflict between people and monkeys and prevent incidents in which locals might unknowingly break the law as they handle the monkey problem on their own, as long-tailed macaques are a protected species under the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act.

“The best way to solve this problem is to keep the monkey population at a balanced level so they can coexist with surrounding communities,” he added.
