Honda weighs new US hybrid factory while USMCA review clouds strategy

Honda’s North American vehicle output is nearing capacity, while 15 hybrid models are planned worldwide and no candidate US site or scale of investment has been disclosed.

  • Honda is considering building a new vehicle factory in the United States, potentially operational around 2030, to increase its production of hybrid vehicles.
  • This consideration is driven by record-breaking U.S. sales of Honda hybrids and a strategic shift to prioritize them amid declining demand for electric vehicles.
  • The company's North American strategy is clouded by uncertainty from the ongoing review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
  • The outcome of the USMCA trade pact review could force Honda to revise its plans for the new factory and its overall regional strategy.

A new vehicle factory in the United States could form part of Honda Motor Co.’s stronger emphasis on hybrids.

With its North American vehicle production nearing capacity, the major Japanese carmaker is considering the project and aims to have the factory operating around 2030, company officials said on Tuesday (August 25, 2026).

No candidate location or scale of investment has been disclosed.

Production could include large hybrid vehicles, among them an SUV model.

US sales of new Honda hybrid vehicles reached a first-half record in 2026, with hybrids popular amid rising fuel prices.

At the same time, declining North American demand for electric vehicles is prompting Honda to prioritise hybrids and plan the global launch of 15 models by fiscal 2029.

Japanese carmakers have built supply chains across the United States, Canada and Mexico and want the free-trade pact among the three countries retained.

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is under review, leaving the North American automobile market increasingly uncertain.

Industry sources indicated that the review’s result could prompt Honda to revise its strategy.
