Thailand Unveils 7-Point Strategy to Cultivate First Healthtech 'Unicorn' by 2030

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) has unveiled a transformative 7-point national roadmap to reposition the Technology and Innovation in Life Sciences National Agency (TILSNA) as Thailand’s strategic mission agency for life sciences innovation, reinforcing the nation's push to become a premier global health hub.

Under the new policy directive, TILSNA will transition from a traditional funding body into a proactive "Innovation Ecosystem Builder."

The primary objective is to accelerate the translation of academic research into globally competitive deep-tech ventures and cultivate Thailand’s first Healthtech Unicorn within five years.

Speaking at a policy orientation at the Sindhorn Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, Prof. Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of MHESI, highlighted the imperative to bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial viability.

"These policies will serve as crucial mechanisms to transform and elevate Thailand's life sciences industry, ensuring sustainable competitiveness on the global stage," stated Prof. Dr. Yodchanan.

The 7 Strategic Priorities for TILSNA

To realize this vision, MHESI outlined seven core pillars to drive TILSNA’s new mandate:

10-Year National Grand Challenge: Establish a decade-long research mandate to unite universities nationwide under a single strategic mission.

Bridging Lab to Market: Shift emphasis from academic publishing to commercialization through alliances with key agencies including the NIA, NVI, PMU C, and HSRI.

'Bio Venture Builder' Platform: Nurture university spin-offs and incubate deep-tech startups to spur the growth of Thailand’s first Healthtech Unicorn.

Catalyzing Global Investment: Attract international capital to position Thailand as a top-tier destination for life sciences and bioeconomy ventures.

Expanding International Partnerships: Forge cross-border alliances to integrate Thailand’s ecosystem into global innovation supply chains.
