Thai-Cambodian border tense as troops warn against provocation

Thai soldiers urged Cambodian troops near Chong Sam Tae to avoid provocative moves after a reported shift close to the border fence

Tensions have risen along the Thai-Cambodian border near Chong Sam Tae in Si Sa Ket after a video clip reportedly showed Cambodian troops moving their position close to Thai forces.

The clip, believed to have been recorded on April 24, showed Thai soldiers lined up and conducting strict patrols near the front of their area of responsibility.

On the Cambodian side, near the barbed-wire line, troops were seen stationed at close range to the Thai side. A blue cloth, resembling shade netting, had also been placed or stretched out in a clearly visible position, in a manner that appeared to mark a point or boundary.

The reported movement from an earlier position drew attention from Thai personnel in the area.

Thai soldiers then shouted across to the Cambodian side at commander level, asking for cooperation and urging them not to take any action that could cause friction or be seen as inappropriate.

They also asked both sides to remain in place and avoid provocation, while requesting that Cambodian commanders coordinate the removal of the cloth from the area.

No clash or violence was reported.

However, the atmosphere along the border remains tense, with signs of periodic pressure and conduct viewed by Thai personnel as provocative.

Although the area is on the Cambodian side, the behaviour was viewed as going beyond normal base positioning and could be seen as a challenge rather than routine border operations.
