Cell Broadcast alerts warn of floods in North and Northeast

Thailand’s disaster agency sent Cell Broadcast warnings as persistent rain raised risks of flash floods, landslides and overflowing waterways.

Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) sent Cell Broadcast warnings to communities in northern and northeastern provinces on Thursday (August 20, 2026) after persistent rain increased the risk of flash floods, run-off, waterlogging, overflowing waterways and landslides.

Residents in affected and nearby areas were urged to move household items to higher ground, relocate vehicles, secure valuables and important documents, avoid electrical hazards and assist vulnerable people.

Rising waterways trigger local alerts

Water levels in Khlong Chomphu in Chomphu subdistrict, Noen Maprang district, Phitsanulok province, were rising and could overflow into communities along the waterway and other low-lying areas.

The warning particularly covered Ban Chomphu in Moo 3, Ban Pluak Ngam in Moo 5 and Ban Nam Pat in Moo 2, as well as nearby communities.

Persistent rain also prompted alerts for Mueang Mae Hong Son, Khun Yuam, Mae Sariang and Sop Moei districts in Mae Hong Son province.

The DDPM warned of flash floods, run-off and landslides in low-lying areas and communities near foothills, singling out Huai Pong and Huai Pu Ling subdistricts in Mueang Mae Hong Son.

Separate Cell Broadcast messages warned of possible flash flooding and waterlogging in low-lying parts of Wang Chin district in Phrae province and Mueang Nakhon Phanom district in Nakhon Phanom province.

Residents in both districts received the same advice to move belongings and vehicles to safer areas, protect valuables and documents, beware of electric shock and look after vulnerable people.

Laplae streams rise after persistent heavy rain

In Laplae district, Uttaradit province, continued heavy rain raised water levels in the Mae Phun and Mae Phrong streams.

The DDPM warned that flash floods, run-off and overflowing waterways could affect low-lying and foothill areas.

The alert covered Mae Phun, Fai Luang, Chai Chumphon, Thung Yang and Phai Lom subdistricts, as well as Hua Dong and Si Phanom Mat subdistrict municipalities and nearby areas.

Wider bulletin identifies flood and landslide risks

Alongside the location-specific Cell Broadcast alerts, the DDPM issued its daily disaster-risk bulletin for August 20, identifying provinces that should prepare for possible emergencies or maintain close surveillance.

  • Areas placed under preparedness instructions were:
  • Flash floods, run-off and short-term waterlogging: Sukhothai

Overflowing waterways and waterlogging: Phayao and Nan

Provinces told to maintain close surveillance for flash floods, run-off and short-term waterlogging were Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Tak, Phetchabun, Loei, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Maha Sarakham, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Nayok, Chanthaburi and Trat.

Nan was also placed under close surveillance for overflowing waterways and waterlogging.

Chiang Rai, Phayao and Nan were identified as areas requiring close monitoring for landslides.

Seven coastal provinces warned of rough seas

The DDPM also advised close surveillance for strong winds and waves in seven coastal provinces: Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, Phang Nga and Phuket.

People requiring assistance can contact local village heads, subdistrict authorities or local administrative organisations.
