A landslide triggered by persistent heavy rain blocked both lanes of Highway 1148 in Nan, northern Thailand, leaving all vehicles unable to pass, according to a warning issued at 7.45am on Friday (September 11, 2026).
Nan Highway District 2 identified the affected location as km73+250 on the Sakoen–Sop Thu section and urged motorists to avoid the area.
Overnight rain saturates mountainside
The district reported that continuous heavy rain across upper northern Thailand overnight had saturated the soil on the mountainside, causing it to give way and slide onto the highway.
Mud and large trees covered both traffic lanes, bringing journeys along the affected stretch to a halt. The blockage disrupted a major connection between Nan and Phayao, as well as travel to tourist destinations.
Machinery sent to clear blocked road
Nan Highway District 2 mobilised personnel and heavy machinery to remove the debris and restore access as quickly as possible. Officials said the work was being carried out cautiously.
Crews also installed warning signs, warning lights and diversion signs ahead of the landslide site to reduce the risk of accidents.
The district urged motorists approaching the affected stretch to change their route immediately.
