TMD warns 24 provinces of heavy to very heavy rain
Thailand’s Meteorological Department warns 24 provinces of heavy to very heavy rain through September 13, with risks of flash floods and run-off.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued its 10th warning for heavy to very heavy rain across Thailand, with the weather conditions expected to persist through Sunday (September 13, 2026).
From September 11-13, rainfall is forecast to increase across the South, with heavy to very heavy rain in some areas.
Heavy rain is also expected in parts of the lower Central region, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, as well as the East. Rainfall in the North and Northeast is expected to decrease.
The conditions are being driven by a high-pressure system or cool air mass from southern China extending over the North and upper Northeast.
This will push the monsoon trough southwards across the lower Central region, upper South, upper Gulf of Thailand and the East, extending towards a strong low-pressure area over the central South China Sea.
At the same time, the south-westerly monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand is expected to strengthen.
Flash floods and run-off possible
The TMD urged residents to remain alert to heavy and very heavy rainfall and accumulated precipitation, which could trigger flash floods and forest run-off.
Particular caution is advised in foothill areas near waterways and in low-lying locations.
People should avoid routes that regularly experience flooding, especially low-lying roads where temporary inundation could develop.
Low-pressure system could become tropical cyclone
The strong low-pressure area over the central South China Sea has the potential to strengthen into a tropical cyclone.
It is expected to move closer to the coast of upper Vietnam during September 13-14.
The public is advised to follow weather forecasts and official warnings closely over the coming days.
