Bangkok MRT services halted after track fire on September 20

Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM) announced a temporary suspension of Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) services at “all stations” on Sunday (September 20, 2026), following a fire along the Blue Line tracks between Tao Poon and Bang Pho stations.

Passengers were evacuated from the station building during the incident. BEM had initially reported an electrical fault at around 12.30pm, causing delays of approximately 60 minutes at some Blue Line stations and affecting services towards Tha Phra, before announcing the suspension.

Firefighters identify burning electrical cables at Tao Poon

The Rama Radio Centre received a report through the 199 emergency hotline at 12.30pm of a fire around the tracks at Tao Poon station on Pracha Rat Sai 2 Road, in Bangkok’s Bang Sue subdistrict and district.

Bang Pho Fire and Rescue Station immediately dispatched personnel and equipment. Crews arrived at 12.32pm and found that the incident involved a short circuit in electrical cables along the tracks, rather than a fire in the station structure.

Bang Pho firefighters reported that flames were still visible as they assessed the situation. The involvement of high-voltage electrical equipment required particular caution while crews planned how to tackle the fire.

Tao Poon crews inspect electrical room and clear smoke

Firefighters reached Tao Poon station’s electrical control room at 12.43pm and used a thermal imaging camera to check for accumulated heat. Crews also deployed a large ventilation fan to remove smoke from the station building and track area, helping protect personnel working at the scene.

Tao Poon station announced the temporary suspension of services on all connecting lines at 12.46pm. The closure was intended to protect passengers and railway infrastructure while rescue personnel, engineers and technicians assessed the damage and carried out urgent work on the electrical system.

BEM promises updates on service restoration

BEM subsequently posted on its Facebook page that MRT services had been temporarily suspended at all stations because of the fire along the tracks between Tao Poon and Bang Pho.

BEM said its staff and relevant agencies were working to investigate and manage the incident, with passenger and staff safety taking priority. The operator said it was making every effort to restore services as quickly and safely as possible.

Acknowledging the disruption to passengers’ travel plans, BEM apologised, thanked passengers for their understanding and cooperation, and pledged to provide assistance. Passengers were advised to plan their journeys in advance and follow further announcements.

BEM said it would provide updates on the situation and the resumption of services as soon as these were confirmed. The announcement did not specify a reopening time.
