Myanmar’s Thaphanseik Dam releases will not flood Thailand, TMD says

Water from Myanmar’s Thaphanseik Dam flows south through the Mu River to the Irrawaddy, in a separate basin from Thailand, Thai forecasters explain

Water released from Myanmar’s Thaphanseik Dam does not flow directly into Thailand and is not a cause of flooding in the country, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has clarified. The TMD issued the explanation following reports about Thaphanseik Dam that prompted public concern over whether water releases could affect Thailand.

Thaphanseik Dam water flows into the Mu and Irrawaddy rivers

Water from Thaphanseik Dam flows south along the Mu River before joining the Irrawaddy River within Myanmar, according to the TMD.

Thaphanseik Dam lies in a separate river basin that has no direct connection to Thailand’s river systems, the department explained. Water released from the dam therefore does not flow into Thailand and cause flooding.

TMD urges continued monitoring of rainfall in Thailand

The TMD stressed that rainfall in Thailand still required close monitoring because weather conditions could change.

The department urged the public to continue following its official announcements and weather forecasts for Thailand.
