Thailand’s Cabinet has approved a special holiday for government staff in Bangkok on Friday, October 16, 2026, alongside three work-from-home days on October 12, 14 and 15. The measures support the capital’s hosting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)–World Bank Group Annual Meetings.
The IMF–World Bank meetings take place from October 12–18 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) in Bangkok. More than 15,000 participants from over 190 countries are expected, including finance ministers, central bank governors, leaders of international financial organisations, private-sector representatives and international media.
Bangkok’s holiday and remote-working arrangements are intended to reduce traffic, facilitate travel for visiting delegations and support security operations around the meeting venue.
Government employees in Bangkok are scheduled to work remotely on October 12, 14 and 15. These remain working days, rather than additional holidays.
The relevant October dates are:
Government agencies outside Bangkok continue their normal schedules, apart from the nationwide public holidays on October 13.
The Bank of Thailand has designated October 16 as a special holiday for financial institutions and specialised financial institutions in Bangkok, in line with the Cabinet decision.
ATM and mobile banking services remain available as normal during Bangkok’s October 16 bank holiday.
Private-sector holiday and work-from-home arrangements depend on individual employers. Employees are advised to check company announcements rather than assume that the government arrangements apply to them.
Companies with Bangkok offices may consider allowing staff to work from home during the meetings.
Travellers in Bangkok during the October 12–18 meetings are advised to allow extra journey time and avoid Ratchadaphisek Road, Sukhumvit Road, Rama IV Road and Asok Montri Road around the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
Security checkpoints and intermittent road closures around QSNCC are expected during the IMF–World Bank meetings to allow official motorcades to pass.
Travellers are advised to use Bangkok’s rail services, particularly the Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Blue Line via Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre station and the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) Skytrain.
