South Korea hopes to open a new chapter in relations with Japan by healing the wounds of the past together, acting President Choi Sang-mok said Saturday.

Choi made the remarks at a ceremony in Seoul marking the anniversary of the 1919 independence movement against Japan's colonial rule as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Cooperation between Japan and South Korea is essential to effectively respond to the grave international situation, said Choi, the finance minister who spoke on behalf of impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol.
