Training and medical examinations for Myanmar cosmonauts, together with the creation of a national Cospas-Sarsat search-and-rescue system, are covered by contracts implementing a Russia-Myanmar space memorandum.

Russian state space corporation Roscosmos announced on Wednesday (August 19) that Russian specialists would select and train Myanmar’s first national cosmonaut, according to Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

The memorandum was signed by Roscosmos head Dmitry Bakanov and Myanmar Space Agency head Soe Myint Maung.

Its scope extends beyond human spaceflight to satellite navigation, the Cospas-Sarsat search-and-rescue system and a system to warn of dangerous situations in near-Earth space.

“Roscosmos will conduct the initial selection and training of a Myanmar cosmonaut according to Russian standards,” the statement read.

Officials exchanged the documents on Tuesday after talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing.

Roscosmos also stated: “Representatives of the Myanmar side and representatives of Roscosmos enterprises later signed contracts to implement the terms of the memorandum at the National Space Centre named after Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.”
