Govt ignored the chance for peace

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2013

Our caretaker government has ignored advice from the Election Commission (EC) chairman to postpone the February 2 poll. Its snubbing of this opportunity for peacemaking is shameful.

First, why should one argue with a referee’s observation when he is independent and supposed to know best?
Second, it is better for the government to take the initiative rather than being forced into the postponement by the EC.
Third, by opting for postponement, the government would show its confidence in gaining enough seats to govern again, irrespective of any reform.
Finally, its stubbornness over this issue could be blamed for any future loss of life.
