Comey vs Trump: It was like ‘High Noon’

SUNDAY, JUNE 11, 2017

Sir, your reports and comments on the testimony of James Comey (the sacked FBI director) before the US Senate Intelligence Committee warm my heart.

It was a real-life drama of three hours of hit-backs from Jim Comey, a principle-minded technocrat, against a high-powered President of the US who has been having his ways in bullying against so many. As the letter-writer Vint Chavala stated, President Donald Trump has now met his match. The three-hour drama reminded me of the classic film “High Noon” in which Gary Cooper with the same height as Jim Comey called the bluff and eliminated the bully.
It is now Comey’s words (from proven existence of the memos) against Trump’s words (and tapes if they exist). Were many words said by Trump that could be construed as obstruction of justice, which is a high crime in the US? Comey’s call was unexpected with memos typed by him every time he had conversations with Trump and emailed to his colleagues as record of the day. FBI personnel is not fools. Asked why did he do that, the answer was being afraid of lies from his superior later on. He admitted that he used those memos through his professor at Columbia to leak to the New York Times to wake up the Justice Department to appoint a Special Counsel with wide authority to examine Russian connections.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller has now hired many former prosecutors, including men and women previously responsible for bringing down Nixon, Enron and the mafia. I wonder whether in a quiet moment, Trump ever thought of not sacking Comey in a high-profile way and defaming his integrity. With Trump as president, there will never be a dull moment.
