River Kwai half-marathon set for December 8

River Kwai half-marathon set for December 8

The fourth edition of the FB Battery River Kwai Half Marathon Thailand Championship is set for December 8, with 7,000 runners taking on a course that includes the historic River Kwai Bridge.

The event was announced on Thursday by BEC-Tero Entertainment, the Athletics Association of Thailand under His Majesty the King’s patronage, the Kanchanaburi Provincial Authority and State Railway of Thailand.

Key sponsors include FB Battery, Muang Thai Life Assurance, Toyota Motors Thailand, Shera, Gatorade, Aquafina, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, FBT, Garmin, Seiko and LED MEN Hi-definition.

The race will have three classes – Half Marathon (21.1 kilometres), Mini Marathon (10km) and Fun Run (6.5km). Registration is open and continues through October 31.

Police General San Sarutanont, chairman of the Athletics Association, said the standards for the half marathon matched those of overseas races.

“I’m happy to see more people interested in running as their choice of exercise,” he said. “Besides getting exercise, participants can enjoy the beauty of nature and the joy of sports tourism.”

Kanchanaburi Governor Jeerakiat Poomsawas said it was a major annual event for his province, with the number of foreign participants increasing every year.

“This is the only race whose route includes the River Kwai Bridge. We have received great support from the State Railway and others in organising the event. Travelling to Kanchanaburi is convenient and the cost of a vacation is not high, so I invite everyone to participate in the race.”

BEC-Tero Sports director Tanya Wongnak said the event’s main organiser had “listened to comments from runners to continue to improve, such as adding additional directional signage, water stations and lane divisions on the bridge. We spent around Bt3 million to create the running path on the bridge alone.

“The big improvement this year is that we have divided food zones for runners in different classes and there will be plenty of food for everyone. This year we have limited the number of

participants to only 7,000 runners. Our running shirt and souvenir medallion are beautifully designed and this is a race that will leave everyone with positive feelings.”

The registration fee for the Half Marathon is Bt720 and for the Mini Marathon and Fun Run Bt520. Applications forms are available at ThaiTicketMajor outlets and www.thaiticketmajor.com.
