New luxurious S-Class smells great, performs better, saves fuel

Mercedes-Benz has raised the bar in the luxury car segment with the introduction of the new S-Class.

Launched in Bangkok last week was the S 400 Hybrid AMG Premium, which comes with a host of new features, including a built-in “Active Perfuming System”. Yes, finally a car that emits fragrance in the cabin. The perfuming system switches on and off automatically, and there are four scents to choose from.
The rear seats are not only adjustable, but offer massage function (6 programmes) and cooling function, while the air-conditioning system can be adjusted differently for each occupant. There is a DVD player as well as Internet connection, and a navigation system along with COMAND controllers both front and rear. The audio system is powered by high-end supplier Burmester and features 13 loudspeakers.
Although the car is larger than its predecessor resulting in more interior space, it is also more aerodynamic, which gives it better performance as well as fuel economy. There aren’t any light bulbs but hundreds of LEDs which consume 75 per cent less energy than conventional lighting systems.
The S 400 Hybrid comes with a V6 engine capable of producing 306hp and 370Nm, as well as an electric motor that pumps out another 27hp and 250Nm. They team up to propel the car from zero to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds and to a top speed of 250km/h (electronically limited).
Meanwhile, average fuel consumption is claimed to be 16km/litre, while CO2 emissions have been cut to just 147g/km.
The bad news is that the S 400 Hybrid is priced at Bt11.4 million, and those who have less to spend will have to wait for smaller engine variants to be introduced later this year.
