BFPL and BPT expand pipeline checks over Rama III oil contamination
BFPL and BPT are widening checks into oil contamination near Rama III, with repairs, compensation and a 32km pipeline inspection planned if damage is confirmed.
Bangkok Fuel Pipeline and Logistics Co Ltd (BFPL), a Bangchak Group company, and BAFS Pipeline Transportation Co Ltd (BPT) have reported further progress in their investigation into oil contamination around Chuea Phloeng Road beneath the Rama III Elevated Road.
On Wednesday (September 16, 2026), the companies carried out additional excavation work to investigate the area amid concerns that oil may have seeped from a nearby fuel pipeline.
The two companies said the area had been secured and detailed inspections were being accelerated to identify the exact location and cause of the incident.
If the cause is confirmed, they will promptly prepare a repair plan for submission to the Department of Energy Business and begin the necessary work. Alternative fuel transport arrangements will also be used to ensure uninterrupted deliveries.
Investigation widened after earlier checks found no pipeline abnormalities
BFPL and BPT had previously inspected excavation points and the pipeline along Chuea Phloeng Road, where oil stains and odours were initially detected.
According to their September 12 report, no abnormalities were found in the sections of pipeline inspected at that time. However, as the source of the oil contamination could not yet be determined, the investigation was expanded to surrounding areas.
Small traces of oil were subsequently detected nearby, although the companies said no conclusion could yet be drawn over whether they were connected to the incident.
BFPL and BPT said they would accelerate inspections to determine the precise location and nature of any damage.
If damage is identified, repairs will be carried out in accordance with engineering standards and Department of Energy Business requirements.
The companies will also provide the department with pipeline maintenance and repair records to support its investigation into the cause of the incident and its assessment of risks within the system.
Full 32km pipeline inspection planned after repairs
Following any necessary repairs, BFPL and BPT will inspect the internal condition of the pipeline using an Intelligent Pig along approximately 32 kilometres of the system to ensure there are no other abnormalities.
The fuel pipeline is owned by BPT and operates under BPT’s business licence.
BFPL, which is part of Bangchak Group, holds the rights to use and manage the pipeline and has operated the system since January 1, 2022.
Both companies said they would cooperate fully with the Department of Energy Business and other relevant agencies in investigating the incident and reviewing pipeline maintenance measures.
They also said they would take appropriate and fair responsibility for damage arising from the pipeline system, based on the facts, evidence and actual damage, while providing assistance to affected parties and restoring impacted areas.
The companies will continue managing fuel transport through alternative channels to maintain supplies to businesses and consumers.
Insurance covers liability and property damage
BPT and BFPL said insurance policies are in place covering third-party liability as well as property damage and business interruption.
The companies have also been communicating with and providing assistance to residents, communities and businesses affected by operations in the area related to the incident.
