Bangkok’s Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Blue Line is ready to resume normal service at all stations on Monday (September 21, 2026), operator Bangkok Expressway and Metro Plc (BEM) said, following 12 hours of repairs and subsequent system tests.
The work followed an electrical short circuit on the tracks between Tao Poon and Bang Pho stations on Sunday (September 20). BEM apologised to passengers for the disruption.
BEM said it immediately followed its incident-management procedures, suspending services on the Blue and Purple lines and helping passengers leave stations safely.
A joint inspection with the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) found that sparks from a set of 750-volt direct-current cables had damaged the power supply and signalling systems, requiring urgent repairs. Purple Line services subsequently resumed after checks confirmed that the line was unaffected.
BEM mobilised engineers and specialists from across its teams to inspect and repair the affected systems over 12 continuous hours.
The work covered signalling, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), communications, electrical cables and the third-rail power supply system. Detailed testing followed once repairs were complete.
Two inspection trains also carried out test runs along both tracks through the affected section to confirm that the systems were ready before passenger services resumed.
BEM said the inspections and tests confirmed that train operations, power supplies and related systems were functioning normally. No additional damage affecting operational safety was found, allowing the company to confirm readiness for normal services at every Blue Line station on September 21.
The operator said it would strengthen inspections and maintenance of the relevant systems, particularly during the rainy season, to prevent similar incidents.
BEM reiterated that passenger safety remained its highest priority and thanked passengers for their understanding and cooperation during the disruption.
