Thailand welcomes cool season as meteorological dept confirms seasonal shift

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2023

Thailand’s cool season has officially started as of Tuesday, the Thai Meteorological Department said.

The announcement was based on the direction of winds prevailing over the country, that mark the change of seasons.

According to the department, cool season begins when northeasterly or easterly winds prevail at an altitude of 100 to 3,500 metres above sea level, while westerly winds prevail at an altitude of over 5,000 metres.

Temperatures in upper Thailand are expected to drop to a low of 23 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, and though there is low precipitation in these areas, rain will continue for a while.

Rain in the South, meanwhile, is not expected to ease anytime soon, the department added.

On Saturday, the department forecast that Thailand’s “winter” would arrive late this year, compared to last year, which saw temperatures dropping from October 29.

It said a mass of moderate to relatively strong cold air was expected to descend on upper Thailand from Tuesday for a week, bringing down temperatures.

The temperature on mountaintops in the North and Northeast is expected to drop as low as 9 to 10 degrees, while the lowest temperatures in upper Thailand will average 21 to 22 degrees. Temperatures in Bangkok’s metropolitan area are expected to hover in the 17-18 degrees region.
