Enticed by recruiters with promises of high pay, these individuals have found themselves unable to return and endured abuse, violence, and confinement. While some managed to escape independently, others were forced to pay a high ransom, with relatives bringing substantial amounts of cash.

According to information from the Mae Sot Police Station, in 2023, 31 Malaysians were apprehended and faced legal proceedings under the Immigration Act. Within this group, some had been deceived into working on the Myanmar side and were compelled to illegally cross the Moei River back to the Thailand side.
