Maximum 20 baht fare for Red, Purple line connection gets underway

Maximum 20 baht fare for Red, Purple line connection gets underway

Passengers connecting between the Red Line urban train and Purple Line MRT at Bang Son station will pay the maximum fare of 20 baht when using the EMV gates from today (November 30) onwards.

The EMV gates only accept EMV cards, which comprise Europay, MasterCard and Visa credit cards of any bank, as well as MasterCard and Visa debit cards of UOB and Krung Thai banks.

This 20-baht cap is eligible on Red Line trains that run from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station (formerly Bang Sue Grand Station) to Rangsit and Taling Chan stations, and the Purple Line trains that run from Khlong Bang Phai to Tao Poon. The two lines intersect at Bang Son station in Bangkok’s Bang Sue district.

Trains on both lines run from 5am to midnight daily.

The campaign is part of the Transport Ministry’s quick-win policy that aims to reduce people’s cost of living by capping the electric train fare at 20 baht, deputy minister Surapong Piyachote said on Thursday.

He reminded commuters to make their connections within 30 minutes and use the same EMV-compatible cards, or else the system would charge them the original price, a maximum of 42 baht.

He also said that the cards should have at least 40 baht credit left on them to cover the bank’s fee for contactless payment, if any.

Surapong is confident that the campaign will attract more people to use the public transport system, which will ultimately help reduce traffic congestion in the city.
