Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, while expressing concern about current economic problems, said on Saturday that he believes introduction of the digital wallet scheme will significantly improve the situation.

Thaksin arrived for lunch at Kiattiocha Restaurant in Chiang Mai province, accompanied by his sisters. Chatuporn Buruspat, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and a native of the province, came to welcome him.

Upon his arrival, Thaksin noted that the economy has not yet recovered. However, he said the digital wallet scheme will be an asset, as there is currently a lack of money in the system. He said banks have depleted their funds, leaving no money available for lending.

Regarding criticism from the Move Forward Party about the digital wallet scheme, Thaksin remarked that differing opinions are common. However, he believes the government's actions are beneficial for the country.

He also highlighted that Thailand's economy is growing more slowly than other ASEAN countries due to insufficient money circulation, leading the government to inject money into the system to support economic growth.

When asked by reporters if the digital wallet scheme would survive, Thaksin replied, "There shouldn't be any problems, from what I can see, because the government might temporarily increase debt at this point, but there will be measures to reduce government debt. Increase debt on one side, reduce on the other, and it will balance out."
