Thai poker sports association , in collaboration with "Te-Na-Tak," Thailand's premier poker community, hosted a grand celebration at the Grand Centre Point Lumpini to honor Punnat Punsrifor his historic achievement as the Global Poker Index (GPI) World Player of the Year 2025.
The event, titled "World’s No. 1 Trophy Ceremony - National Result Celebration," marked a milestone for Thai sports.
Punnat , the first Asian athlete to ever hold the world’s top rank, officially ascended to the No. 1 spot on January 7, 2026. With over 18 years in the professional circuit and career earnings exceeding $31.7 million (approx. 1 billion Baht), Punnath swept all four major categories: GPI Ranking, Player of the Year, Asia Ranking, and Asia Player of the Year.
Strategic Roadmap for Thai Poker
During the ceremony, MR.THANA JULPANSAK - President of Thai Poker Sports Association, emphasized that poker is now officially recognized as a sport by the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT). He outlined an ambitious roadmap to professionalize the game nationwide
Academic Integration: The TPA plans to collaborate with leading institutions, including Kasetsart University and the Thailand National Sports University, to develop formal poker curricula and courses focusing on skill and strategy.
Digital Hub: A new official association website will launch to provide public information, member registration, and news updates.
National Ranking System: The TPA will establish domestic ranking tournaments to identify local talent, with top-ranked players receiving support to compete on the international stage.
Rising Stars and Industry Support
The celebration also recognized Methavee Thaveekitvatee, a leading female poker athlete who secured the GPI Thailand Female Player of the Year 2025 award following her recent victory at the Asian Poker Tour Jeju Classic 2026.
"Last year was a turning point," Punnat stated during his speech. "The recognition from the Sports Authority of Thailand proves that poker is a game of skill and strategy. I will continue to compete globally to reflect the limitless potential of Thai athletes."
Ms. Oranit Engchuan, Strategy Director of Te-Na-Tak, added that the private sector remains committed to supporting the sport through education and communication, ensuring Thai players have a clear path to global success.
