TOT has targeted revenue from its broadband Internet service of about Bt11 billion this year, up from about Bt9.5 billion last year.

The state agency’s executive vice president for marketing and product development, Somchit Terachutikul, said yesterday that more than Bt5.2 billion in revenue was earned in the first six months of the year, 6-7 per cent higher than the first-half target.

TOT is one of the three leading broadband service providers, along with True Corp and Triple T Broadband. It has about 1.4 million broadband subscribers. Last month True said it had about 1.47 million subscribers to its broadband Internet service.

Yesterday TOT kicked off new packages for this service, starting from a connection speed of 10 megabits per second for a monthly fee of Bt590. The aim is to acquire 200,000 new subscribers through these packages within the next six months.

Subscribers to the new packages can also choose one of two options, a certain number per month of free calls from their home telephones within their provinces or a certain duration per month of free Wi-Fi access nationwide.

For example, if they sign up for the 10Mbps package, they can choose from 50 free calls per month or 50 hours of free Wi-Fi service per month. TOT’s commercial Wi-Fi service covers 30,000 spots nationwide.

The subscribers are required to stay with the packages for 12 months. The subscription period will end next March.

TOT will also automatically upgrade the connection speed of existing subscribers to the 7Mbps package, worth Bt590 monthly, to 10Mbps for the same monthly fee, but they will not enjoy the options of free calls or free Wi-Fi access.

Somchit said the strength of TOT’s broadband Internet service was its vast network, which is nationwide and not only in major provinces.
