Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked Thailand’s Siam Cement Group (SCG) to expand its investments in the country.
He met SCG president and chief executive officer Roongrote Rangsiyopash in Hanoi on Wednesday and said Vietnam hopes the Thai group will reap success in its cooperation and investment projects in Vietnam, including the oil refinery and petrochemical project that it is implementing in partnership with the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam).
The Vietnamese government will provide the best possible conditions for SCG to carry out this project as soon as possible, the PM said.
The group’s investment in Vietnam is suitable and will benefit both sides at a time when Vietnam is enjoying vigorous growth and is seeking more investment, he added.
Roongrote thanked the Vietnamese government for supporting the group’s investments, noting that they were expediting the joint petrochemical project with PetroVietnam, since it was their most important project in Vietnam. |– Viet Nam News
Big C to buy watermelons from beleaguered farmers
Big C supermarket chain has increased the purchase of watermelons from Vietnam’s Quang Ngai province to help farmers there who are unable to sell their crop even though prices of the fruit have tumbled.
According to the local Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province has around 700 hectares under watermelon this year, and the yield is estimated at 24,000 tonnes.
Hundreds of hectares are ready for harvest, but there are no traders to buy the fruits. Many farmers in Binh Son, Son Tinh, Tra Bong, Duc Pho and Mo Duc districts are feeding their watermelon to cattle.
To help the farmers, Big C is buying more than 400 tonnes for its stores nationwide at a price of 4,800 dong (Bt7) per kilogram.
The supermarket plans to sell the fruit at the same price to customers while also calling on them to join hands to support the Quang Ngai farmers.
All the watermelons the supermarket buys will have clear origins and meet food safety and hygiene standards, it said. |– Viet Nam News
