SET sees number of investors to surpass 1m

THE STOCK EXCHANGE of Thailand (SET) has forecast the number of investors to surpass the one-million mark in 2018, while a securities house commented that marketing is not easy as investors want more than just cheap stocks.

Rinjai Chakornpipat, senior executive vice president at the SET, said that this year could see the number of investors rising to more than one million from the current figure of about 900,000.
Statistically, more young investors have been turning to the market.
“This year, individual investors are expected to increase at the same rate as last year due partly to the active stock market. Based on a survey, we found that most of the younger investors who have opened accounts for stock investments had never invested in the stock market before,” she said.
Currently, there are 1.5 million accounts with 70-80 per cent of the total having started online trade.
The exchange is encouraging investors to make long-term investment through a monthly investment called Dollar Cost Average (DCA).
Boonrat Limatibul, a director at SBI Thai Online Securities, said that competition for online securities trade will be higher this year as there are now more market players, while Thai investors have different behavior.
The brokerage, which previously relied on low commission fees, has been operating in Thailand for three years.
She said Thai investors might not only want low commission fees, but other convenient services as well. Thus, the securities firm will now focus more on investor services and add convenient channels for investment, she added .
SBI Thai Online Securities is now working with its parent company in Japan and expects to finalise a new business plan within April.
Preliminarily, the securities firm plans to grow the number of customer at above the market average. It now has a total of 10,000 accounts , about 30 per cent of which are active.
