Thai Airways Opens Self-Collection Hub as Flooding Backlog Eases

National carrier opens 24-hour self-collection centre at Suvarnabhumi as military personnel assist in clearing thousands of stranded bags following severe floods

  • Thai Airways has opened a 24-hour self-collection center at Suvarnabhumi Airport for passengers to retrieve luggage delayed by recent floods.
  • The collection hub was established to address a severe backlog of approximately 10,000 bags caused by staff shortages during the flooding period.
  • To help clear the backlog, around 100 Royal Thai Air Force personnel are assisting ground staff with sorting and unloading stranded luggage.
  • Passengers must verify their bag's status online and bring their passport, boarding pass, and baggage tag to use the self-collection service.

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) has opened a dedicated 24-hour self-collection centre at Suvarnabhumi Airport, effective from Saturday, 3 October 2026, as the national carrier accelerates efforts to resolve a severe baggage backlog that has disrupted thousands of travellers.

The crisis began between 26 and 28 September, when severe flooding across Bangkok and surrounding provinces prevented ground handling staff from reporting for duty.

The resulting labour shortage, combined with equipment bottlenecks, led to an accumulation of approximately 10,000 delayed suitcases, widespread flight cancellations, and significant passenger disruption at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

To accelerate processing, transport authorities deployed around 100 Royal Thai Air Force personnel to assist ground staff with sorting and unloading stranded luggage.

Officials confirmed that while nearly 2,000 bags have been returned and no new backlog has accumulated since 29 September, several thousand items of luggage remain to be cleared. Flight schedules are gradually normalising as staff return to duty.

New Self-Collection Logistics and Verification Process

To streamline retrieval for passengers who prefer not to wait for courier dispatch, THAI has designated its Ground Service Maintenance Building at Suvarnabhumi Airport as a round-the-clock self-collection hub.

Passengers are instructed to complete the following verification steps prior to arriving at the facility:

Verify Baggage Status: Travellers must check the online tracking portal (baggage.airportthai.co.th) to confirm that their luggage has been located and indexed before travelling to the airport.

Location: Once confirmed as available, passengers can proceed directly to the THAI Ground Service Maintenance Building.

Required Documentation:

Self-Collection: Passengers must present their passport, boarding pass, and original baggage tag.

Collection via Authorised Representative: Representatives must present a signed Power of Attorney letter, copies of the baggage owner’s passport or national ID card, a copy of the representative’s passport or ID card, and the owner’s original boarding pass and baggage tag.

For passengers who have registered for home delivery via the airline’s QR Code Baggage Delivery system, THAI representatives will contact owners directly to arrange dispatch times prior to delivery.

THAI reiterated its sincere apologies to all affected passengers for the operational delays and stated that staff are working continuously alongside airport management to restore standard baggage service times.
