Each university told to focus on a trade partner

The Office of Higher Education Commission (Ohec) is preparing to implement Education Minister Woravat Auapinyakul's "one university, one country" policy in a bid to boost the competitiveness of Thai educational institutions, a senior official said yesterd

Ohec secretary-general Dr Sumet Yaemnoon said that Woravat has assigned each Thai university to closely study a single country, preferably one in the Asean region which can become or already is an important trade partner, as part of a government-funded project. Hence, Ohec is preparing an operation plan for the project, which will be funded by the central budget allocated for the 2012 fiscal year, he said, adding that the plan would be proposed for Woravat's consideration later.

Several universities have already conducted such surveys, but have usually done it from a regional aspect with more emphasis on academic rather than commercial facets, Sumet said.

However, Woravat wants the universities to study the trade and economic condition of these countries in order to get information for future plans, hence the strategies need to be further discussed and adjusted accordingly.
