Pumping into Bang Sue canal hastened but water continues to rise

The authorities are speeding up efforts to pump floodwater into Bang Sue canal in an attempt to reduce the level of floodwater on three main roads leading to the capital's inner areas.

As the flood creeps deeper into the city on Vibhavadi and Phaholyothin roads, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is working to drain the water into Bang Sue canal.
However, five of eight pumps at a key pumping station at the canal were out of order on Monday night, possibly due to being in operation for too long. As a result, the water level on one section of Vibhavadi Road rose from 0.60 to 0.80 metres on Tuesday morning.
Along Phaholyothin Road, the depth of the flood is about 0.50 metre and the roadway is impassable for small vehicles. Some entrances of the subway’s Phaholyothin station are closed due to about 60 centimetres of floodwater.
At Hayak Lat Phrao intersection in Chatuchak district, commuters must go to work by military trucks or boats.
On Ratchadaphisek Road, the flood is quite stable at about one metre deep from Ratchayothin intersection to the Criminal Court.
Still further on Ratchadapisek Road near the Chao Phraya Park Hotel, the water level in Bang Sue canal has overflowed into nearby communities in Din Daeng district but some residents have not yet evacuated.
A medical unit and a temporary kitchen have been set up in front of the Chao Phraya Park Hotel. There are about 900 evacuees at two temporary shelters.
The authorities built 0.50 metre high wooden path over water to facilitate access.
Din Daeng district chief Saensuk Satongkun said the floodwater is as deep as 0.30-0.50 metre in some communities along Khlong Bang Sue.
Three pumping stations in Din Daeng district are speeding up pumping water into Khlong Bang Sue to protect inner areas on Suthisan Road.
