Asean members to cooperate in flood migitation and relief

Asean's leaders will agree to enhance cooperation in disaster risk management and mitigation as well as postdisaster relief, recovery and rehabilitation in member countries when they meet in Bali later this week.

In a move initiated by Thailand, the 10 leaders will issue a statement on cooperation in flood prevention, mitigation, relief, recovery and rehabilitation after their summit on Thursday.
The statement, of which a draft has been seen by The Nation, calls for further cooperation among members, sharing best practices in disaster management and management of water resources.
Countries in the region, including Cambodia, Vietnam and notably Thailand have faced severe flood disasters. In Thailand alone, the biggest flood in 50 years has killed more than 500 people and displaced millions of others. Parts of Bangkok and the suburbs are now inundated.
