Law Society calls for crackdown on royal insults

The Law Society of Thailand on Friday issued a statement calling for law enforcement authorities to crackdown on the spread of royal insults in cyberspace.

“Thai citizens are duty-bound to uphold and protect the monarchy," Law Society president Sak Korsaenruang said.
Sak said national police chief General Priewpan Damapong and Information and Communication Technology Minister Anudith Nakornthap should intensify efforts to unmask the culprits behind the royal insults.
For cases where there is insufficient evidence to identify the culprits posting offensive messages, the authorities should seek a court order to block the websites in question, he said.
He also reminded the international community to be mindful of Thai culture and legal traditions before making subjective criticism on the lese majeste law.
“Each country has differing legal precedents, which should not be imposed on another country without factoring in the context of history, culture and national security,” he said.
